Our nation’s ability to respond to disasters like Hurricane Sandy is a federal budget issue. The President’s proposed budget for 2013 includes $62 billion in discretionary funds for Housing & Community, including $10.2 billion for disaster relief. Governor Romney has pledged to cut non-security discretionary spending by 5% across the board. It’s not clear whether or not disaster relief would be cut as part of that plan.
